Shares of local, log-grown shiitake mushrooms offered for 2014
Announcement from Wellspring Forest Farm:
Join our 2014 CSA share and receive a half pound (or more!) of fresh, log-grown shiitake mushrooms each week. The share runs from the second week in June through the second week in September, for a total of 14 weeks. Pick-up locations include Thursdays on the patio at the Westy bar (alongside Plowbreak Farm CSA pick-up) or on-farm in Mecklenburg on Fridays. If you can get together 5+ orders with neighbors and friends we will offer free delivery weekly to a location in Ithaca or Trumansburg.
Cost:
$112 for 1/2 pound per week for 14 weeks ($8/week)
Double shares (1 lb/week) get a 10% discount
The farm also has pre-inoculated logs for sale if you prefer to grow-your-own. Logs come ready to go, you just set them up in a cool, shady spot.

Local applesauce now available
Our small-batch, unsweetened applesauce contains a blend of local, organic, great-tasting apples and nothin' else, including the varieties: Ida Red, Jonagold, Spigold, Northern Spy, Tart Keeper, Melrose, Golden Delicious, and a few others. All of the apples in our sauce were grown by our partner Hemlock Grove Farm in West Danby (www.ithacaorganicapples.com), including some in the orchard overlooking our vegetable fields. What is CSA? Learn about this partnership between consumers and farmers, and how it can benefit you! More than 20 CSA farmers serving Tompkins, Seneca, Cayuga, Tioga, Chenango, and Schuyler Counties will be on hand to talk with consumers about their farms and CSA programs. In addition to the traditional vegetable CSA, attendees will find fruits, berries, baked goods, meat, eggs, herbs and herbal products. All participants will be entered in a drawing for a variety of door prizes donated by the farms. Free admission, plus activities to keep the kids busy, and space to sit and review farm information. Ithaca Farmers Market Rutabaga Curl to go on as planned after kidnapping of famed emcee farmer Peter McDonald
Ithaca, NY — With a heavy heart, the Rutabaga Curl Grand Crucifer Discussionary Committee announces today that it has received a ransom letter from a group calling themselves the Rutaburgulars, who have apparently kidnapped our gentle emcee Peter McDonald, and are calling for a complete end to the event or we may never see him again.
But we do not negotiate with cruciferous terrorists! The games must -- and WILL -- go on this year, our sixteenth annual rutabaga curling world competition. Hundreds will brave blustery weather and substandard travel conditions and possibly the delay of their holiday plans to attend at our great stadium at Steamboat Landing, under the market pavilion.
A new emcee will be raised up to temporarily replace our beloved Old Farmer McDonald, and one extraordinarily talented Ithacan will be again able to grasp the Rutabaga Curl 1st place medal as his or her own!

The event starts at High Noon on December 21st, with the ceremonial procession of the athletes. The market will be open as usual with craft, food and farmer vendors selling products. Registration starts at 10 a.m., with a Turnip Toss for turnips under the age of 13 to participate. Rutabaga Curly fries will be available for purchase, as well as commemorative games t-shirts.
The Ithaca Farmer's Market is a cooperative with 150 vendors who live within 30 miles of Ithaca, New York. Agricultural vendors grow and offer high quality fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, poultry and dairy products. Food vendors bring a wide variety of freshly baked goods, jellies, honey, and sauces as well as delicious meals to eat at the market. Craft items made by local vendors will be for sale in the store’s café area and will include handmade jewelry, local photographs, hand-knit sweaters, handmade clothing items, and more. Nutrition educators from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County will share a recipe and samples of a healthy and affordable holiday roasted butternut squash dish. Looking for a healthy, home-made gift idea? See a sample pasta-and-beans “Gift in a Jar” idea from Cooperative Extension, and take home a recipe flier with instructions on how to make several other inexpensive holiday gifts of this kind, including mixes for vegetarian chili, brownies, cookies, cornbread, and teas you can put together at home to give family and friends. Hands-on activities are planned for children and adults. The event also will include a door prize drawing for food and craft prizes, and LIVE MUSIC ALL DAY:

New CSA: Giving Ground Farm 2014

My name is Betti Lambro. My husband, Joe, and I and our two young boys, Finnegan (5) and Oliver (20 months) have a small local farm, Giving Ground Farm, and we operate a small CSA.
We are located just four miles west of Trumansburg. 2014 will be our third farming season here (though we began farming over ten years ago). We will have on-farm CSA pick up on tuesdays from 3-7, and at the Ithaca East Hill farmers market on wednesdays from 4-7, one day a week (TBA) at Dragon Village in Trumansburg, and if we are able to get into the Trumansburg Farmers Market we would also offer pick up there on Wednesdays from 4-7.
Our 2014 season will run for 20 weeks from mid June to the end of October. We offer a half share for $275.00 (one full bag) and a whole share for $500.00 (two full bags).
Early in the season we usually have about six different veggies available at a time, and that increases to ten to twelve different veggies per week. At the market, members choose which items to take home rather than being given a pre-packed box.
Our 2014 egg share consists of one dozen eggs each week for the twenty weeks at $4.00 per dozen for a total of $80.00 per egg share. You can buy multiple egg shares to meet your needs.
In January we will have grass fed ground beef available from our rare, triple-breed cattle, American Milking Devons. We are selling it at $5.00 per pound and are taking bulk orders which need to be picked up the day (TBA) we get it frozen from the butcher.
In the fall of 2014 we will have beef available as cuts or by the whole, half or quarter. We might also have pork available but are not yet sure.
Our long term goal is to grow into more of a full-diet CSA and provide vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs, and dairy.

Announcement: Winter Apple CSA
Announcement from Hemlock Grove Farm:
We are pleased to announce that we are now adding a winter session to our apple CSA. Eat local organic apples though the winter months with our new wintertime apple CSA!
WINTER APPLE SHARE!
Similar to our fall CSA, shareholders will receive 60 pounds of delicious certified organic apples spread over 6 bi-weekly distributions, starting December 5th and ending February 20th. Each distribution will supply shareholders with a 10 pound bag containing a changing selection of our best winter storage apples, such as Melrose, Idared, Baldwin, Enterprise, Fuji, Jonagold, Mutsu and Northern Spy. Shares cost $95.
Two distribution sites are being held in cooperation with the Full Plate Farm Collective, at Stick and Stone Farm (4 ½ miles north of Ithaca on Route 96) and Three Swallows Farm (just 3 miles south of Ithaca on 96B).
Apple bags will be available for pickup at these two locations beginning on Thursday afternoons on distribution days, and remain available until the following Wednesday. However, the sooner you get your apples home and in your fridge, the longer they will keep, and the sooner you can enjoy them!
We are also collaborating with Jenn & Andy's to offer a downtown pick-up site. They are located caddy-corner from the library at 124 S. Cayuga Street. This pick-up will be Thursdays only, from 12:00-6:30pm.
To sign up, send a check for $95 made out to Hemlock Grove Farm to the address below. Indicate your preferred pick-up site (Three Swallows, Stick and Stone, or Jenn & Andy's), and please include your email address on your check!

Holiday Food Hubs Collect Fresh Food for Neighbors in Need

Holiday Food Hubs Make It Easy to Give Fresh Food to Neighbors in Need
ITHACA, N.Y. — Friendship Donations Network's new Holiday Food Hubs will make it easy to donate food to those in need in our community during the holiday season by dropping it off at new, convenient neighborhood locations.
Unlike other food drives, which collect mostly canned goods, donors to this drive are encouraged to give fresh, perishable food — everything from sweet potatoes to cranberries to salad makings.
There are 2 collection locations: 222 East Falls Street and 411 North Cayuga Street. Both will accept food donations Tuesday, Nov. 19, through Tuesday, Nov. 26 and Saturday, Dec. 14, through Monday, Dec. 23. 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM daily.
Volunteers will transfer food from the hubs to FDN's facility in the Just Be Cause Center on West State Street to be stored in the cooler or freezer before being distributed to area food pantries and other needy recipients.
The idea for the Holiday Food Hubs came from an FDN volunteer who distributes food to low income housing communities in Ithaca. She observes the increased need that many people experience during the winter holiday season.
For the past 25 years Friendship Donations Network (FDN) has been collecting healthy, nutritious food from area supermarkets and farms that would otherwise be thrown away and distributing it to area food pantries.
The volunteer organization serves 2,000 people weekly through its hunger relief programs.
Friendship Donations Network is available to accept donations of food 7 days/week. Call 216-9522 to coordinate pickup or drop off.

Good Life Farm here, back to offer you Thanksgiving turkeys from our certified organic, diversified fruit+vegetable+grass farm!
Good Life turkeys are part of an on-farm cycle of fertility and pest management. They are rotated daily through asparagus plantings, following harvest in the orchard and behind cows and horses in the pasture. Our management takes advantage of the best part of turkey nature- curiosity, which leads to lots of foraging, pest clean up and manure-depositing throughout their paddocks.
Our customers repeatedly tell us that our turkey is “the best they’ve ever had”. We invite you to join them and us for a delightful centerpiece to this year’s Thanksgiving meal!
