NY Secretary of State Perales to visit Groundswell Incubator Farm (8-14-13)

From Groundswell Center for Local Food and Farming:
NY Secretary of State Cesar Perales will visit Groundswell's Incubator Farm
at EcoVillage in Ithaca on August 14
Ithaca, NY
New York Secretary of State Cesar Perales will visit the new Groundswell Incubator Farm on Wednesday, August 14 from 11:00 AM– 12:30 PM.  He will be accompanied by Jorge Montalvo, Director of the NYS Office for New Americans.
The Incubator Farm is a ten-acre parcel of agricultural land which Groundswell is making available to qualified beginning farmers who need affordable access to land.  Conveniently located at EcoVillage, just outside the City of Ithaca, NY, the Incubator is adjacent to West Haven and Kestrel Perch farms, established organic growers.  The Incubator Farm offers a low-risk entry avenue for new producers by providing land, production and marketing infrastructure, production support services (such as tractor tillage), and ongoing support from experienced farmer- and business- mentors through Groundswell's New Farmer Training Programs.
The NYS Office for New Americans assisted Groundswell in obtaining Appalachian Regional Commission funds to help immigrant and refugee beginning farmers get started in farming.  ARC funds have also been used to develop some of the agricultural infrastructure at the Incubator Farm including a brand new 8-foot deer fence, and irrigation system. Two New American beginning farmers are enrolled in the Incubator Farm program and are in beginning to harvest their first crops at this time.
