Some Leafy Greens Recalled at Local Supermarkets

Some leafy greens and salad mixes sold at Wegmans under the store label earlier this month are being voluntarily recalled due to contamination risks.  The greens were sold under other labels across the region, including A&P, Hanaford's, Stop and Shop, and Shaws.  No illnesses have been reported, according to the FDA.

Organic spinach, arugula, romaine, and spring mixes with "sell by" dates of 1/15 are among the products recalled.  Wegmans reports that the products were sold at all of their stores, including Ithaca's, between January 5, 2011 and January 15, 2011.  The affected products have been removed from the store shelves.

The potential contaminant is Listeria monocytogenes, which causes short term fever, nausea, and diarrhea in otherwise healthy people. But it can be lethal to the elderly and young children and cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

The greens were produced by Massachusetts supplier, State Garden.

  1. I read this information in the local paper. My problem is that I buy things like this and use them; so finding out I may have eaten tainted food so long after the fact (this is 13 days late) is not very helpful.

BTW since I did not get sick, does that mean some of the product was not tainted?

Does any one know how the tainted food made it to market? Is there a way to prevent this from happening again?

Why did you not post the information on the possibility of tainted Organic beef (even more of a scare to me than produce having issues)!
