This Thanksgiving, kids from Ithaca's Northern Light Roots and Shoots group baked 60 pies for local food pantries and Thanksgiving dinner programs. That totals 360 slices of pie for people in need.
"Last year," says Felix, who participated in the project, "our Roots & Shoots group gathered drops at Indian Creek Farm and also asked for donations at Greenstar and other grocery stores. Farmers helped by giving us pumpkins to help make the pumpkin pies. Last year we made so much money that we made the pies out of organic materials. I delivered the pies to the Red Cross when we were done. This year the Homeless Shelter asked us to bake twice as many pies as last year."
This year, the group used mostly organic ingredients, thanks to the generosity of Greenstar customers, funding from Greenstar and Wegmans, and the support of the homeschooling community. Foundation of Light and Brooktondale Community Center donated their facilities for the baking.
