What's so great about small farms?

What's so great about small farms?

This article in the Atlantic sums up one possible answer to that question.

The author, a vegetable farmer, writes, "A highly centralized food and agriculture system makes an incidence of contamination a big deal. If something bad happens in one central place, it can make people sick simultaneously, all over the country."
