Protect your tomatoes and potatoes from blight

This Thursday, July 2, 2009, 7:30 to 9:30 pm, Cornell and Rutgers plant pathology experts will present a webinar on the destructive Late Blight disease affecting area tomatoes and potatoes.

Late blight has never occurred as early or widespread in our area as it has this year, according to experts.  Symptoms include brown spots on stems, white fungal growth, and irregular brown and yellow spots on leaves.  Photos can be found here.  This is the same disease that caused the Irish Potato Famine in the 1800s.

If you find severe blight on your plants, experts recommend destroying your plants by sealing them in a plastic bag and throwing them in the garbage.  These steps will prevent spores from blowing into a neighbor's crop or festering in your compost pile.
