Last week, the owners of Red Newt Winery and Bistro, Deb and Dave Whiting, were in a terrible car accident. Debra Whiting died from her injuries, and Dave is recovering. Red Newt Cellars, located near Watkins Glen, recently won the 2011 Winery of the Year by the New York Wine & Grape Foundation.
Debra was Executive Chef & Co-Owner of Red Newt Cellars Winery & Bistro, even though she never had professional culinary training. She used locally-sourced ingredients for her ever-changing menu and she served on the executive board of the Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty.
Recently, Destinations Travel Magazine published an article featuring Whiting. She had also recently taped an episode of the reality show “Chopped" for the Food Network and was planning to release a cookbook.
