Monday, May 23, 5:00-7:00pm Volunteer Work & Learning Sessions Ithaca Children's Garden, Rt. 89 at Cass Park, Ithaca. Drop in at the Ithaca Children's Garden for volunteer work and learning sessions on Monday evenings 5:00-7:00pm from May 16 - June 27. Volunteers will work with the guidance of professional horticulturist Linda Yannone to get the garden in shape this season. Come once or several times to learn gardening basics hands-on, or simply to help the Children's Garden look its best. No gardening experience required. All ages are welcome! Introduction to Edible & Medicinal Herbs & Spices on Monday, June 6, 6:00-8:00 pm at Cooperative Extension Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca. Learn about the growing habits and benefits of herbs and spices culinary, medicinal, and aroma-therapeutic. Enjoy a hands-on class with a complete sampling of herbs and plenty of time for Q&A. The Seneca County Cooperative Extension and Ovid Library have partnered to present a "Planning to Canning" course that will be held on the second Thursday of each month from 6:30PM to 8PM starting March 10th through September 8th at the Edith B. Ford Memorial Library, Ovid, NY (with June & August classes at Ovid Fire Department). Each workshop costs only $5 or sign up for all seven for $30. Harvest Dinner at Remembrance Farm on Sunday June 19, 2011 at 5pm. Chef Scott Signori of Stonecat Cafe will prepare a gourmet dinner, sourced and served at Remembrance Farm, 6295 Searsburg Road,Trumansburg, New York 14886. Wines from Damiani Wine Cellars accompany each course. Proceeds benefit the Healthy Food for All program, a collaboration between CCE-Tompkins and local farms, that provides subsidized CSA shares for over 125 families with limited incomes in in our community. Gardener's Pot Swap & Recycling Event from 9:00am-6:00pm on Friday, June 24 - Monday, June 27
at Cooperative Extension Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca NY. From Friday June 24 through Monday June 27, you can leave your plastic nursery pots, trays and cell packs in the designated area off the CCE-Tompkins main parking lot on Willow Avenue. You may take away as many pots as you can use, too! Plastic that is left after the weekend event will be taken to a recycler for processing. This is a FREE opportunity for gardeners to recycle their plastic plant containers instead of throwing them away. Questions? Compost with Confidence: Getting Started on Saturday, June 25, 10:00-11:00am at the Compost Demonstration site, Ithaca Community Gardens at the entrance to the Ithaca Farmers' Market. Master Composter volunteers will provide information and hands-on demonstrations on how to set up and manage a compost system in any setting! This FREE 5-part series meets on the last Saturday of the month from June through October. Each class covers composting basics and a special topic. From June 28 - June 30, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County will be offering a Master Food Preserver training, taught by Cornell Cooperative Extension food preservation experts. This is a 3-day program for those who would like to go beyond the basics of home food preservation. However, no prior experience in food preservation is required. Class will be held from 8:30am to 4:30pm all 3 days. Participants will learn the science of food preservation, boiling water bath canning, pressure canning, freezing and drying foods, quick pickling, and making jam/jelly using the safest, most updated information available.
