NOFA-NY: Free Composting Marketing Workshop on Wed, January 12, 9:15am – 4:00pm at Cornell University, 135 Emerson Hall, Tower Rd, Ithaca, NY. Whether selling compost is your primary business or a side business, this workshop is for you! The workshop will provide marketing insights and sales techniques, including technical information on compost applications and benefits, feedstocks, quality standards, and marketing principles. Learn tips on developing a marketing plan for your compost operation, how to position your product, the ins-and-outs of compost market segments, bulk sales vs. bagged, distribution strategies, and making money on tipping fees. Sales strategies will also be covered, including sales points, using social media and new media techniques, branding, and customer education tips. Wine Analysis: From Harvest to Bottling on January 13, 2011 - All day at the Geneva, NY, Food Research Lab. Participants will learn the theory and practice behind the most common juice and wine analysis. Each day contains designated lab time to allow for hand-on practice. Building resiliency into your home in the case of temporary or periodic shortages in the delivery of goods or services is something folks often think is a good idea, but don't always get around to doing. With the support of a group, you can take this "to do" off your list, meet some other families in your community and eat scones too. The Dryden Community Center Cafe will be hosting free classes on gardening presented by the co-founder of the Dryden Community Garden: Grow Your Own. A fresh topic on the third Tuesday of every month 5:30 - 6:30 at 1 West Main Street in the center of Dryden, NY, at the intersection of Route 13, Route 38, and Route 392. Intended to be both a class and a discussion group, led by Kerra Quinn (Dryden Community Garden co-founder and Garden Question Answerer At-large), all levels of know-how are asked to attend; meaning - don't just come to learn, if you have garden knowledge please come to share. Bring your favorite seed catalogs. January's topic: Seed Selection or Will I actually eat a rutabaga if I grow them? or How to not produce more zucchini than anyone really needs. * Choose your vegetables! * Deciding that you want to grow your own food and need to have a garden is easy. * Deciding what to grow and how much seed you'll need to buy and when and where and how to start planting can be daunting. * A gardener's all time favorite January event - seed catalog perusal. There will be nice pots of herbal teas from locally harvested plants and homegrown mint. Children are welcome. Be prepared to take notes.

Women in Agriculture on Tuesday January 18, 11:30 AM -2:00 PM at the Dryden Fire Hall on 26 North Street, Dryden, New York. Come join a diverse group of interesting women who are all involved in agricultural businesses. This informal group will talk about shared experiences, needs and concerns in running a farm, balancing work and family, improving on-farm communication, planning for the farm to continue to the next generation, expanding the farm, and other topics that interest you. Edie McMahon of McMahon's EZ Acres will share tools and strategies learned in her 25 years as bookkeeper/ finance manager on the family farm that have helped her to move from just "doing books" to financial recordkeeping that provides the basis for sound business decision making. She hopes that other seasoned farm bookkeepers will share tips and techniques that they've found to be useful. Social time starts at 11:00am; topics start at 11:30am. $5 fee includes lunch. The discussion will include how a food policy council might support an equitable and sustainable food system for all, how to meet the diverse needs of our neighborhoods, and how buying clubs, urban agriculture, and food preservation and safety could help promote food security.

Provocative Pairings: Wine and Cheese on January 20, 2011 - 6:30PM to 7:30PM at the Museum of the Earth (A Light in Winter Festival Event) Wine and cheese—what makes them work so well together, or fail so miserably? How does taste work on our brains to create the perfect pairing? Chris Gerling is an enologist with Cornell Cooperative Extension and Nancy Taber Richards is a local artisanal cheese producer who represents the growing number of small-scale cheesemakers in Upstate New York. The event will be a moveable feast, with three tasting stations and roaming experts in the exotic netherworld of the Museum of the Earth. Featuring local wines and cheeses. $20 per person.

Unexpectedly vivid performances take place between courses—perhaps baroque violin, South Indian percussion, virtuosic vocals, Japanese flute or trombone. Save Money - Grow Your Garden - Learn to Teach -Become a Master Composter! Master Composter training is ten classroom sessions or field trips and practical education through volunteering in the community. Learn in-depth instruction about various aspects of composting and how to be effective teachers for a variety of age groups and in a range of settings. Applications are due February 4th.
