Ithaca Beer Co. & Taverna Banfi Educational Event at the Statler Hotel on December 1, 2010 - 6:00PM to 8:30PM. A Dinner Celebrating Local Food & Beer. Autumn is the time to enjoy hops from Ithaca as Taverna Banfi hosts local brewer Ithaca Beer. The dinner begins with a reception featuring a beer and hors d’oeurves tasting followed by a delicious 3-course dinner paired with beers in Castello Banfi prepared and served by School of Hotel Administration Restaurant Management students. Movie: Temple Grandin. December 1, 2010 - 7:00PM to 8:00PM at Willard Straight Theatre Cornell. Claire Danes stars in this biopic about Temple Grandin, who is a scientist, innovator, professor of animal science at Colorado State University, renowned animal welfare activist, much-in-demand veteran of the speaking circuit, and arguably the world's most accomplished and well-known adult with autism. Her experience growing up with severe autistic symptoms allowed her unique insights into the behavior of cows and other animals, leading her to her life's work of developing more humane methods and facilities for livestock handling. This Emmy Award-winning biopic from HBO chronicles her life in the 1960s and 1970s, beginning with her high school years and ending after she had established her business, Grandin Livestock Handling Systems. $7.

December 2 – 3, 2010. Young Farmers Conference at Terrytown, NY. Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture will present its third annual Young Farmers Conference: Reviving the Culture of Agriculture, a program especially for young and new farmers. This year’s event will be a forum for over 200 participants to learn from agricultural luminaries, peers, and advocacy organizations through workshops, keynotes, and panel discussions. Over two days, participants have more than 40 workshops to choose from, ranging from technical and hands-on to policy, business, and marketing-related sessions. The YFC is a unique opportunity for these new and aspiring producers to learn from leading thinkers in the field and to connect with their peers from across the country. December 4, 2010. Beginner Maple Producer. 9am - 11am. CCE Education Center, 248 Grant Avenue, Auburn, NY. The workshop will cover a variety of aspects of maple syrup production including: why make maple syrup, tree identification, tree health, tapping, sap collection and handling, boiling, energy efficiency, finishing and grading syrup, canning, marketing and regulations. This workshop is mimed at the small or beginning maple producer and would be useful to the homeowner looking to tap a few trees in the backyard. The fee is $10 per family. Finger Lakes Cheese Trail on October 9, 10, and December 11, 2010. Learn about the wonderful variety of cheeses produced here in the Finger Lakes by visiting our local cheese producers and sampling their products.  The Finger Lakes Cheese Trail is a new organization of 10 cheese producers from throughout the Finger Lakes who make artisan cheeses from milk produced at their family farms.  Great cheeses are being made, ranging from English style raw milk cheddars, cheese curd, gouda and swiss types from dairy cow milk, to blue cheeses, chevre and feta from goats and sheep milk.  Visit our page on the Finger Lakes Cheese Trail and follow the links to the participating farms! http://ccetompkins.org/agriculture/events/finger-lakes-cheese-trail

Agribusiness Economic Outlook Conference on December 14, 2010 at Cornell. This annual event examines trends and presents forecasts for agriculture in New York. The program will focus on the current situation and outlook for the national economy as well as a fruit, vegetable and horticulture; and dairy and feed grains sessions. Special general sessions on the world outlook and financial situation are planned. The program is presented by the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.
