Ithaca Farmers Market at Steamboat Landing 9am -3pm on Saturdays in May.

Compost Fair, Saturday, May 1, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Cooperative Extension Education Center, 615 Willow Ave., Ithaca. Celebrate spring’s arrival by stopping by the fair for a guaranteed good time! See and experience all aspects of composting. Learn more than you ever thought possible about making and using “black gold.” Teams of Master Composters will be on hand to answer your questions. There will be interactive displays, activities for kids and continuous tours of our composting demonstration site. Prize drawings will be held at 3:30 pm for all attendees and everyone registered on the Tompkins County Compost Map (register by filling out a card at Cooperative Extension or click on “Get on the map!” on our website: ccetompkins.org/compost). Admission is free and open to the public. See you at the fair!

Ithaca Farmers Market Backyard Poultry Day. Join us in Celebrating the opening of Sunday Market! May 2nd will be the 1st Sunday Market of the Season, and our first "Backyard Poultry Day!" This will take place at Steamboat Landing on the Waterfront 10am - 3pm at the corners of 3rd St. and Rt.13. Prizes will be awarded! Included: Karma & Rosie Gloss/ Kingbird Farm, with displays of “Hatching eggs, 3 cages of birds, important info for your questions to be answed, and judging for the “Wacky Nest Box Contest;” John Henderson, with Unusual Eggs for Display, and Posters of Locally Developed “Henderson Chicken Charts;” Nancy Pihlbad, with “Pysancy Egg Art Designs;” Rich Foster, (Local Carpenter & Design) with One Stationary & One Mobile Coop; Susan Verberg, (Photographer & Chicken Farmer) with Caged Birds, Chicken Ark with Live Birds, and Brochures, Flyers, and Posters.

Cheese Lecture and Tasting with Laura Todd, Associate Cheese Maker at Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Co. on May 3, 2010 - 5:15PM to 6:15PM at Room 204 Stocking Hall, Cornell University. Laura Todd from Picton, Ontario, she produces hand made cheeses using fresh, locally produced goat and sheep milk. Fifth Town integrates traditional methods, contemporary tastes, and craftsmanship ethics with local terroir. The company has a strong focus on environmental and social responsibility, and achieved Platinum LEED accreditation under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program in March 2009. Laura will lead a tasting of Fifth Town cheeses, $5.

Youth Salad Gardeners Program at Ithaca Children's Garden, Cass Park, Ithaca, New York. Get your hands dirty this spring at the Ithaca Children's Garden. The Salad Farmers Program is currently enrolling youth ages 6-12 for the spring program running May 5-June 23 from 3:30-4:30pm. Design, plant, and tend your own salad garden plot full of lettuce, greens, carrots, radishes, beets, and more. Learn new gardening skills, play games, and throw a salad party for family and friends. No gardening experience required. The program takes place at the Ithaca Children's Garden, southern end of Cass Park, Route 89 in Ithaca. The cost for the program is $35. Siblings receive a $5 discount. Space is limited. Please pre-register by May 1st.

Ithaca Crop Mob at Kestral Perch Berry Farm in Ecovillage, Ithaca, NY on Saturday, May 8th, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by lunch. Weeding and terracing blackberries for a maximum of 30 mobbers (RSVP required). Please bring: water, work gloves, weeding tools, digging shovels and digging forks. Please wear: Long sleeves and pants (prickers), closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing (sunscreen, sun hat, rain gear). RSVPing helps our farmers plan their tasks and lets them know how much food to make. Spring Garden Fair and Plant Sale on May 15, 2010: 09:30 AM - 02:30 PM at Stewart Park
Gardner Parkway in Ithaca, New York. Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers and other garden groups offer perennials, specialty plants and gardening advice. You will find organically grown vegetable transplants and heirloom varieties. A huge variety of annuals, herbs and many specialty perennials are offered by over 40 area growers. Flowering shrubs, trees, hardy roses and fruit crops round out the selection. Free soil pH testing is available and educational exhibits and information are offered. Kids can join the Ithaca Children's Garden for a fun hands-on activity. Bring baskets, wagons, and other containers for transporting plants. 5th Annual Mushroom Workshop Weekend on May 22 & 23 Our annual mushroom weekend is back and expanding to include more on the fascinating world of fungi. Workshops will cover the basics of both wild and domestic mushroom production and harvesting with local grower Steve Sierigk and special guest Rafter Sass. Choose to: (a) Join us Saturday, May 22 (9 a.m. to noon) at the sugarbush of Sapsquatch Maple Products (www.sapsquatch.com) in Enfield, NY where local artist and mushroom grower Steve Sierigk will cover the basics of shiitake log cultures; species to harvest, when and how to prepare wood, and a hands-on demo of the process inoculated with sawdust spawn. FEE: $30
(b) Join us for the entire weekend (Sat & Sun, 9 - 5 p.m.), where in addition to the Saturday inoculation, we'll dive deeper into the potential of mushrooms with guest instructor Rafter Sass. Discover how we can incorporate delicious, nutritious fungi in our veggie gardens, backyards, lawns, landscaping, balconies, window boxes, and more. Sunday's workshops will be at Cayuta Sun (cayuta.org) in Cayutaville, NY. Limited camping is available for a donation. FEE: $100-300 (sliding scale)

June 25 -27 at Tompkins County Cornell Cooperative Extension 615 Willow Ave in Ithaca. GARDENER'S POT SWAP & RECYCLING EVENT. From Friday June 25 through Sunday June 27, you can leave your plastic nursery pots, trays and cell packs in the designated area off the CCE-Tompkins main parking lot on Willow Avenue. You may take away as many pots as you can use, too! Plastic that is left after the weekend event will be taken to a recycler for processing. This is a free opportunity for gardeners to recycle their plastic plant containers instead of throwing them away.

June 2010. Meat Processing and Food Safety Certificate Program. SUNY Cobleskill will be offering this program in January and June. This intensive hand on training program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills students require entering employment in the meat processing industry. Students will be skilled in sanitation, food safety, slaughter, meat cutting and processing. As part of the students’ preparation for the industry, the program consists of specialized training in the accuracy of cutting, knife handling, portion control, merchandizing and the utilization of all products. The program includes: Safety and Sanitation, Species Harvesting/Slaughtering, Primal Fabrication, Retail Cutting and Wrapping, and Customer Relations. The cost for this program is $2,995 which includes textbook, hard hat, frock, 5 inch boning knife, 12 inch butcher knife and safety cutting glove.
