From 6 to 9 pm, Wednesday, February 24, 2010, a Home Food Preserving Workshop will be held at the Varna Community Center, 943 Dryden Road (Rte 366). Members of IthaCan will lead hands-on activities in canning, cellaring, pickling, and drying. A $5 donation is suggested.
Plenty of people know the joy of eating fresh local produce in season. But what happens when temperatures drop and the snow falls? For one group of enthusiasts, preserving food at home – by drying, canning, pickling, and cellaring – offers a chance to enjoy local flavors all year long and build community self-reliance.
Members of IthaCan, a network of home food preservers in Tompkins County, will host a food preserving workshop on Feb 24 at 6pm. The event starts with a slide show on why home food preservation is needed for a sustainable food system. Then each participant can choose two of the four techniques – drying, canning, cellaring, and pickling – and go to two workshops.
*Yours truly is one of the organizers.
