Local expert explains link between health care debate and food policy

In the Ithaca Journal yesterday (10/26/09), community nutrition expert Jennifer Wilkins explained the connection between the health care debate and food policy.

She wrote:
"Evidence from numerous studies points to the critical role diet plays in chronic disease risk. Treatment costs for diet-related diseases are mounting: $147 billion for obesity, $116 billion for diabetes and hundreds of billions to treat cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Making healthier food choices more affordable and available to all Americans is a logical complement to - if not an essential component of - reform."
