Food: Environmental Impacts and the Future of Food from 7:30 - 8:45pm at Phillips Hall, Cornell. Robert Howarth (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) and David Wolfe (Horticulture) will present. This is part of the Sustainable Earth, Energy and Environmental Systems (SEED) speaker series at Cornell University. This speaker series is designed for high school and college students and the surrounding Ithaca community. The series - which is free and open to the public - will be held on Monday nights during the Fall 2009 semester. Location: Cornell University Phillips hall Room 101 (TCAT Bus #10 - Sage Hall stop).

Exposure to Household Food Insecurity Over Five Years in the United States. From noon until 1:30, Parke Wilde, Tuft University professor will present the first nationally representative longitudinal estimates of exposure to food insecurity in a period of five consecutive years. From the Survey of Program Dynamics (SPD) (n=12,185), 16.9% of the U.S. population was exposed to household food insecurity in at least 1 y and 1.04% experienced persistent insecurity for 5 y from 1998 to 2002. Assuming transition probabilities are stable, a Markov model forecasts that 25.9% of the U.S. population would be exposed to household food insecurity in a 10 y period.

Each meal will be a 5-course delight created by a team of five local chefs - each preparing one of the courses. Local wines will be paired with each course. The chef teams will be different at each dinner and the menus promise to be very special. Seating is limited at each of the dinners.  Tickets cost $75 per person per dinner and proceeds benefit cooking and nutrition classes for low income people. Sustaining our Farms and Communities Workshop at Eco-Village from 9:30 AM to 6 PM (plus optional Local Foods Dinner). The Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming joins with the EcoVillage Center for Sustainability Education to host this all day experiential workshop. Spend the morning at West Haven Farm, Groundswell’s primary farm "campus" and a highly successful, 260-member Community Supported Agriculture farm located at EcoVillage. West Haven produces and markets certified organic vegetables and orchard crops on ten acres, including year-round production using a state-of-the-art heated greenhouse and several unheated plastic “hoophouses.”

The Governor's New York State Council on Food Policy will hold its annual fall meeting on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at the Moakley House, 215 Warren Road in Ithaca, New York.  The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin with presentations from Cornell University academics from 11:00 a.m. until 12 noon. Topics covered will include, but are not limited to: the state of New York's Dairy Industry; Cornell University's Small Farms Program; and the New York State Food Venture Center, which is an outreach program of Cornell University's Food Science and Technology Department and housed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station.  The group will break for lunch and reconvene at 1:00 p.m. at the Moakley House. Commissioner Hooker will proceed over the Council on Food Policy Roundtable discussion from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. This meeting is open to the public for observation only.  From 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. there will be a public comment period. Those wishing to present comments are asked to RSVP no later than Friday, October 16, 2009 and provide comments in writing. Comments will be limited to five minutes per speaker. Historic Ithaca and the New York State Barn Coalition are pleased to present the 12th Annual New York State Conference on the Preservation of Historic Barns.  There are many great speakers lined up for this year's event, which will take place Saturday, October 24 at the Ithaca Foreign Auto Service building at 501 West State Street.  Additionally, Historic Ithaca will be

Local Meats Tasting & Education Fair from 2:30 -5:30pm on Oct 25 at the Women’s Community Bldg., 100 W. Seneca St., Ithaca. Meet local meat producers, see and taste their products, and ask questions about their farms. Taste cooked samples and attend concurrent presentations on tasty recipes for unfamiliar cuts, cutting a whole chicken into smaller cuts, and more. Consumers can meet at least 14 livestock producers from across our region, learn about their farms and products, and taste samples prepared by Chef Sean O’Brien of Serendipity Catering.  There will be presentations on how consumers can process a whole chicken into smaller cuts, recipes for unfamiliar cuts, and other information on local meats. Participating producers include: Kingbird Farm, Straight-Way Farm, McDonald Farm, Sabol's Farm, Orchardland Farm, Porkshop Valley, Ever Green Farm, Birdsall beef, High Point Farms, Quinn's Irish Hill Farm, Ort Family Farm, Angus Glen Farm, The Piggery, and Ellis Hollow Farm. Some meats will be available for sale. Environmental Sciences Colloquium - Some Thoughts on Agriculture and Food in Green Development from Gilbert W. Gillespie, Development Sociology on October 30, 2009 - 12:15PM to 1:15PM  Contemporary environmental issues pose complex challenges to societies that require multidisciplinary views and interdisciplinary approaches to their solution. The colloquium will provide a platform for discussion about current issues in the environmental sciences and introduce students to the complexity of information, views, and approaches.

November 13-14, 2009 It Takes A Region: A Working Conference to Build our Northeast Food System at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center, Albany, NY. Food system advocates, policymakers, planners, researchers, educators, farmer groups, food businesses, consumer groups, students, and others will discuss questions like: Why regional? What does a regional food system look like? Who needs to be at the table? What are our realistic milestones? What do we need to know, measure and monitor?
