Blustery winds greeted shoppers and vendors at the Ithaca Farmer’s Market today, April 4, 2009. Never mind that workers in the neighboring municipal yard were loading salt into trucks in preparation for the forecasted snow.
Under the market pavilion, smiles prevailed. People perused a stunning array of goods: leeks and potatoes, eggs and cheeses, sweets and breads, coffee and wines, fresh tulips and dried arrangements, photography and textiles.
Welcoming shoppers as they passed, Greg Reynolds of Glenwood Farms offered information about the nutritional quality of his farm’s organically-raised bison meat. Little Tree Orchards sold both Macintosh and Ida Red Apples, picked last fall but still holding up. A line of people stood before The Piggery, studying a chalkboard listing products like chorizo, ham, and lard.
Vendors occupied about two-thirds of the stalls and just a couple hundred or so shoppers wandered. The season is just getting started.
